New Faculty - Prof. Jinhyun Choo
03_01
  • • Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering (Minor in Mechanical Engineering), Stanford University

  • • M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Seoul National University

  • • B.S. in Civil, Urban, and Geosystems Engineering, Seoul National University

    • Jinhyun Choo joined KAIST in January 2022 as an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Born and raised in South Korea, Prof. Choo obtained his B.S. and M.S. from Seoul National University and worked at the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology. Later, as a Fulbright Scholar, he received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and conducted postdoctoral research at Columbia University. Prior to joining KAIST, he was a faculty at The University of Hong Kong.

    • Prof. Choo researches next-generation methods to analyze, predict, and manage the behavior of subsurface systems as they relate to challenges toward safeguarding and decarbonizing the built environment. He specializes in the modeling, simulation, and data analytics of mechanical and multi-physical processes in porous, granular, and discontinuous materials including soils and rocks. His current work focuses on integrating physics-based simulations with machine learning to spearhead digital twin technologies for geosystems. Areas of application include smart infrastructure, natural hazards mitigation, and clean energy technologies.

    • As an internationally active academic, Prof. Choo has been elected to be a member of the Computational Geotechnics, Computational Mechanics, Soil Properties and Modeling, and Poromechanics committees of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He is also a member of the Numerical Methods, Geomechanics from Micro to Macro, and Energy Geotechnics technical committees of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).

    • Prof. Choo is also keen on nurturing a future generation of students and scientists. In 2021, he was appointed by Seoul National University (SNU) to teach a course on computational solid mechanics in the SNU International Summer Program. Also in 2021, two of his Ph.D. students were awarded from two student competitions (in Computational Mechanics and Poromechanics) at the 2021 Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) Conference – the ASCE’s premiere annual mechanics conferences. Prof. Choo’s group was the only group winning multiple awards in the conference.
