New Faculty - Prof. Albert Tonghoon Han

    • Dr. Albert Tonghoon Han’s research and teaching backgrounds encompass land use, urban growth management, environmental planning, and data mining for urban planning practice and research. His research interests include the following three areas: (1) evaluating regional growth management and local land use policies for urban sprawl mitigation and land preservation; (2) analyzing the effectiveness of environmental policies for air pollution and climate change mitigation; and (3) enhancing planning process with data mining and online platforms. Dr. Han’s research appears in top-tier planning journals including the Journal of the American Planning Association, the Journal of Planning Education and Research, Land Use Policy, Energy, the Journal of Environmental Planning and Management, and the Journal of Urban Affairs. Dr. Han has previously taught both undergraduate and graduate-level planning courses at the University of Texas at San Antonio, the University of Calgary, and the University of Pennsylvania. At KAIST, he will be teaching Urban and Regional Sustainability, Urban and Regional Planning, Introduction to Geospatial Analysis, and Planning for Climate Change.

      Prior to joining the faculty of KAIST, Dr. Han was an assistant professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a postdoctoral research fellow/lecturer at the University of Calgary. Dr. Han holds a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.S. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Iowa, and a B.S. in Life Science and Biotechnology from Korea University.
