The primary object of KAIST CEE is to contribute to the development of construction and environmental industries in the nation. To achieve this objective, KAIST CEE exerts its greatest efforts on upbringing of world-leading civil and environmental engineers equipped with leadership and technical abilities. As the leading research institute of Korea with its research capability commensurate to the top 10 universities in the world, KAIST CEE focuses on training young talented civil and environmental engineers to prepare them with academic capabilities to lead sophisticated research projects.

The field of civil and environmental engineering has huge domestic and international markets and is a field that requires convergence of diverse technologies. Therefore CEE is an indispensable building block for the realization of the creative economy. The worldwide desire for improved quality of life, the advent of the era of intensified global competition, and rapid change in the environment and social structure calls for innovative technologies in CEE. Such innovation can be achieved through convergence of seemingly divergent fields of science and engineering, which is made possible by interdisciplinary research and education and internationalization. Our field has added great potential to create huge economic value by incorporating information technologies, urban design and planning technologies, and bio- and nano-technology to CEE. KAIST CEE bears primary responsibility for establishing the framework for technological convergence, interdisciplinary research, and internationalization to train young engineers and scientists for realization of the creative economy.

Our prospect is to step up as a world leader in the academic disciplines of civil, architectural, urban and environmental engineering and to train the world-leading engineers and scientists in these fields through education with focus on technological convergence. To fulfill this mission, KAIST CEE will provide high-quality education, conduct innovative interdisciplinary research, come up with innovative technological advances, and actively participate in international collaborations and activities. Furthermore, KAIST CEE will instill leadership and entrepreneurship in the faculty and students.

KAIST CEE has established the following strategies for technological convergence, interdisciplinary research and education and internationalization. Our primary strategic goal of training world-leaders will be achieved through innovative education that will bring up innovative engineers with academic excellence and capabilities to systematically carry out sophisticated projects, the ability to identify and resolve practical challenges, and the leadership and open-mindedness commensurate to global workforce.

KAIST CEE’s strategy for an establishment of a convergent, multi-disciplinary, globalized research and education is to integrate information technology, biotechnology, and nano-technology, and urban design and planning to the traditional core of civil and environmental engineering. Moreover, KAIST CEE aspires to become multi-disciplinary research graduate school with world-class research capability through development and management of research and education programs that train globalized researchers and specialized workforce fit for industry.

The realization of our strategic goal of establishing an innovative infrastructure system will be achieved through exploration of unconventional knowledge and technology, active cooperation with the industry, and creation of high value-added industry and subsequent creation of new job opportunities.
